What is anointing oil?
The Bible mentions anointing oil many times in the Bible but what is it, who can use it, and how is it made?
Anointing oil is made from spices and herbs. In Exodus when the temple needed to be blessed he called on the Levites to create an oil with specific ingredients. HE also cautions that this exact reciep should not be made to anoint anything not sacred or any person. So how come people sale anointing oil and use it to bless houses and themselves with it? That is because most people create a simular formula that smells somewhat like the origional. Then the oil is blessed, prayed over to GOD to bless and cleanse the oil. A prayer might also include that the oil to be made holy for the work of YOUR glory. The verses below list the ingrediants in the anointing oil for consecration of the temple.
Exodus 30:30-34 KJV 30 And thou shalt anoint Aaron and his sons, and consecrate them, that they may minister unto me in the priest's office.31 And thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel, saying, This shall be an holy anointing oil unto me throughout your generations.32 Upon man's flesh shall it not be poured, neither shall ye make any other like it, after the composition of it: it is holy, and it shall be holy unto you.33 Whosoever compoundeth any like it, or whosoever putteth any of it upon a stranger, shall even be cut off from his people.34 And the Lord said unto Moses, Take unto thee sweet spices, stacte, and onycha, and galbanum; these sweet spices with pure frankincense: of each shall there be a like weight:
So what is anointing oil used for? Here is the scriptures that describe what anointing oil can be used for.
Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry? let him sing psalms. Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.
